Climate-Resilient Water Harvesting Systems for Smallholder Vegetable and Legume Producers in Lilongwe District, Malawi

Malawi’s vegetable consumption is just 11.8 kg per person each year — far below the WHO’s 146 kg recommendation. Seasonal water shortages and limited climate-smart farming keep supply low and prices high, especially in urban markets.

SAFFACC is seeking funding to launch a 41-acre demonstration site to equip 150 smallholder households with affordable water harvesting systems and sustainable practices for high-value vegetables and legumes. This initiative will boost food security, raise household incomes, and build resilience against climate change — proving that climate-smart farming is both feasible and scalable
