Malawi stands at a critical juncture in its development journey—where the escalating impacts of climate change now demand urgent, innovative, and inclusive solutions. With over 80% of its population reliant on smallholder agriculture and natural resources for livelihoods, the country is highly vulnerable to climate-induced shocks such as droughts, floods, and erratic rainfall patterns. These challenges are not only undermining food security but also constraining Malawi's broader social and economic development. In recognition of these threats, the Government of Malawi has demonstrated strong leadership by adopting forward-looking policies that lay the groundwork for climate-resilient development. The National Climate Change Management Policy (NCCMP), National Adaptation Plan (NAP), and National Resilience Strategy (NRS) all reflect a systematic national commitment to build adaptive capacity across communities and sectors. These frameworks are complemented by the National Agriculture Investment Plan (NAIP), which strategically aligns agricultural transformation with climate-smart approaches and value chain development.
SAFFACC’s Strengthening Climate-Resilient Value Chains Across Malawi is designed to leverage this momentum by aligning directly with national policies and build on proven models, with a sharp focus on empowering local actors and driving systemic change within vulnerable agricultural value chains. By anchoring climate resilience at the core of agricultural development, the project plans to offer a timely opportunity for catalytic investments that delivers both immediate returns and long-term impact.
